Dr. Sproule with patient ImogeneDr. Sproule was born in Dallas, Texas, USA, to Canadian parents.

He did his medical school training in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, receiving his MD in 1980. While a medical student, he did an extended elective at the Parkland Hospital Burn Unit in Dallas, working for part of that time with Charles Baxter, the originator of the famous Parkland Formula.

He followed this with a Plastic Surgery residency in Edmonton, completing this in 1985. During his residency, he was intimately involved in the care of patients in the Northern Alberta Firefighters Burn Unit, which is one of the busiest and most sophisticated units in North America.

Following the completion of his training in Edmonton, he travelled to Scotland and worked for 1 and 1/2 years at Canniesburn hospital as a Registrar and acting Senior Registrar, including 6 months in the Burns Unit at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

He then set up practice in Toronto, Canada, and directed the Scarborough Firefighters Burn Unit for several years before it was amalgamated with the other regional burn units in the Toronto area. He holds a position as Lecturer in the Department of Plastic Surgery at the University of Toronto. Since 1990, he has worked with Interplast (now Resurge International), in a number of capacities, travelling to a variety of developing countries performing surgery and teaching colleagues with emphasis on Cleft surgery, Burn Surgery, and Microsurgery. He has served on several committees for the organization, presently sitting on the surgery committee and the medical advisory committee. He has taught courses as a visiting educator in burn care for Resurge in Ecuador, Peru, and Vietnam. Recently, he also lead a team to La Paz, Bolivia to teach a course in reconstructive microsurgery. He has acted as the lead surgeon performing the first free tissue transfers ever done in Bolivia, as well as previously in Guyana and Bangladesh.

In addition, he is the medical director of the CRSF (Canadian Reconstructive Surgery Foundation) and heads up a program through this organization in Guyana, South America, that has included designing and building the countries only burn unit and coordinating the education of the countries first specialist Plastic Surgeon, utilizing both on-site visits and telemedicine support.
